چکیده

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) was applied to kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) fibers in order to clarify the chemical composition of in situ lignin. The core and bast samples obtained from the middle position of variety Chinpi-3 were pyrolyzed at 500 °C for 4 s with TMAH. The core pyrogram revealed peaks retaining the structural attributes of guaiacyl and syringyl -aryl ether subunits, and the bast pyrogram was dominated by peaks retaining the structural attributes of syringyl -aryl ether subunit. Both pyrograms lacked products derived from p-hydroxyphenyl -aryl ether subunit. Product distribution showed that: (1) the core in situ lignin comprises 1.5 parts of syringyl-, 1 part of guaiacyl -aryl ether subunits, and (2) in the bast in situ lignin the syringyl -aryl ether subunits are present in greater quantities than the guaiacyl -aryl ether subunits. The syringyl to guaiacyl lignin unit (S/G) ratios determined by conventional pyrolysis and alkaline CuO oxidation also supported the TMAH/Py results. 4-Methoxy and 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid methyl esters were present in the core pyrolyzate and absent in the bast pyrolyzate. 4-Methoxycinnamic acid methyl ester * Corresponding author. Pyrolysis of lignin in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide: a convenient method for S/G ratio determination.

Pyrolysis-gas chromatography in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) was applied to the determination of the ratio of the abundances of the syringyl beta-aryl ether subunits to those of the guaiacyl equivalents (S/G) in lignin. Diazomethane-methylated kenafs (Hibiscus cannabinus and Hibiscus sabdariffa) and beech (Fagus crenata) in situ lignins were employed. Relative abundances...

Chemical characterization of lignin and lipid fractions in kenaf bast fibers used for manufacturing high-quality papers.

The chemical composition of lignin and lipids of bast fibers from kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) used for high-quality paper pulp production was studied. Pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) of fibers showed a lignin with a high syringyl/guaiacyl ratio (5.4) and minor amounts of p-hydroxyphenyl units. Simultaneously, sinapyl and coniferyl acetates were also identified, indicat...

Chemical characterization of lignin and lipophilic fractions from leaf fibers of curaua (Ananas erectifolius).

The chemical composition of leaf fibers of curaua (Ananas erectifolius), an herbaceous plant native of Amazonia, was studied. Special attention was paid to the content and composition of lignin and lipophilic compounds. The analysis of lignin in the curaua fibers was performed in situ by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and showed a lignin composition with a p-hydroxyph...

Pyrolysis of lignin in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH): products stemming from beta-5 substructures.

Lignin model compounds, synthetic lignins, and cedar wood have been analyzed by pyrolysis-gas chromatography(-mass spectrometry) in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) to examine the behavior of beta-5 substructures specifically under these conditions. Two model compounds contained a beta-5 linkage and a gamma-CH2OH group. The phenolic model compound produced stilbene products ...

Chemical composition of abaca (Musa textilis) leaf fibers used for manufacturing of high quality paper pulps.

The chemical composition of leaf fibers of abaca (Musa textilis), which are commonly used for high-quality paper pulp production, was thoroughly studied. The results revealed that the lignin content was 13.2% of the total fiber. The analysis of abaca fibers by pyrolysis coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) released predominantly compounds arising from lignin and p-hydroxyc...
